How do you stop moving the target? Have you ever said something like, “I’ll be happy when I make more money, find a partner, or lose weight” or “I want to experience more abundance”? How do you define happiness or abundance? What stops you from experiencing it right now?
Perhaps, you already have what you are longing for, and you just don’t realize it. For example, I had a conversation with a client about embracing abundance in her life. Through the course of the conversation, she realized that she kept changing her target of when she’d receive the level of abundance she desired.
Five years ago, she would’ve thought the place she is currently met the criteria for abundance. Once we examined more closely, she realized she was already experiencing abundance in several areas of her life. She doesn’t have to continue to spend energy on something that she already has. Instead, she chooses to spend time enjoying and being thankful for what she has, because it is enough. Even more importantly, she was using the quest of her search for more abundance to distract herself from another area of her life that warranted attention.
If you find yourself constantly moving the target of when you’re able to feel certain emotions such as happiness, joy, or peace, try taking a step back to see in what ways you might already have it. Not spending time searching for something you already have will free up space for you to focus attention on an area you may be neglecting.
